Common Diabetes Myths and Facts: What You Should Really Know

Every November, the world turns its attention to diabetes awareness ; a condition that affects millions but is still surrounded by myths and misinformation. Over the past week, I started a series on The Health Dossier to educate people and replace fear with facts.

Many of us have heard statements like “people with diabetes can’t eat fruits” or “once you have diabetes, your life is full of restrictions.” These beliefs don’t just create fear; they make it harder for people to live confidently and manage their health properly.

In many communities, health information often comes from friends, family, or social media and not from health professionals. While advice may be shared with good intentions, it can quickly turn into common diabetes misconceptions that cause more harm than good.

Some people avoid nutritious foods, others self-medicate, and many feel hopeless because they think diabetes means 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒇 𝒏𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒍 𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆.”

The truth is that diabetes can be managed and people living with it can live long, healthy, and fulfilling lives.

Fruits are not forbidden; what matters is portion control and balance. Exercise, regular check-ups, and healthy eating all play a key role. With the right information, anyone can make small, sustainable lifestyle changes that protect their health.

Living well with diabetes starts with knowledge and understanding the facts helps prevent complications and reduce stigma.

The first step toward solving this problem is awareness. The more people understand what diabetes really is, the easier it becomes to support loved ones, make informed choices, and reduce stigma.

That’s why 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙃𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝 𝘿𝙤𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙚𝙧
is dedicating this month to exposing common diabetes myths and sharing the real facts to help you learn, unlearn, and live better.

Let’s move from fear to understanding.
Let’s replace myths with facts.
And let’s build a culture where health knowledge is shared accurately and compassionately.
